Featured Artist: Aurélien Cantou
0Posted by Jelka | November 2, 2009Here’s a nice little chat with Aurélien Cantou (aka Aurebob) without much thinking…
‘Mais où est le Docteur Freud?’
Hey Aurélien, how are you doing? Would you like to introduce yourself? Who are you, where do you live, what are you doing?
Hey! Sorry for answering this questionnaire very late, but that’s a good way to introduce myself. I’m a man on the moon, always late. I live in Strasbourg where I study Illustration at “L’Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs”, but originally I come from Toulouse, in South of France. So, I’m cold here, and I’m sorry for you in Berlin.
Can you describe your working process?
In general, I prefer working on paper, I’m not completely comfortable with the computer. I use it to do the layout and colour. What I prefer is making comics, in general, very stupid.
What are your sources of inspiration?
Comics in first instance. Some names: Sfar, Blain, Blutch, Battaglia, Mathieu, Gaultier, Tom Dieck… The cinema of Billy Wilder, and Jazz music.
Why is the topic of ‚Ugly & Drippy’ interesting for you? In which way did you try to work on it?
I like dirty things. And thinking not when I draw. And not thinking in general, because I often have headaches when I do that.

Are you doing a lot of shirt-design? What do you like about that? And is there any difference between doing a design for shirts and other works?
I don’t do a lot of shirt design, I’m too slow for that. Designing for T-Shirts is quite different than a classic illustration because someone will wear it, and have to be able to wear it. It’s difficult to be provoking, mean, rude and dirty. But it’s cool to see someone with your tee in the street!
Did you have any gallery exhibitions before?
Yes, you didn’t know that? I’m an international star of graphic design and illustration. So, New York, Paris, London, Tokyo, Buenos Aires and now Berlin. By the way, thank you very much for this exhibition!.
Thank you very much, Aurélien, and good luck for the future!
You too!
