Now in 2D*
West Berlin Gallery proudly presents Mike Friedrich and Timrobot – NOW IN 2D* from September 30th to October 30th 2010 at the West Berlin Gallery.
The 3D trend is rising and everything is jam-packed with 3D effects, new products flood the market everyday, everything gets a 3D facelift. It’s like Botox for media. Even the art world is not safe from this trend. But do we need all this? Mike Friedrich and Timrobot – both members of The World Organisation, a Berlin based art collective- say «NO!» At least not yet.
In the West Berlin Gallery they will show a potpourri of illustrations and paintings dealing with the 3D theme in a humorous and satiric way. Watch as 2D collide when Timrobot’s cute characters enter Mike Friedrich’s underworld. Coming from a background of comics, Saturday morning cartoons and a time where 3D was more like blue and red lines than hightech effects, the artists want to set a statement and present their artworks in a maybe not so serious way – completely in 2D.
* Special 2D-glasses will be provided at the Opening at 7pm on the 30th of September. The evening will be completed by music and drinks to make it a date.

For the first time in human history, the majority of the earth’s population is living in urban residential areas. The urban environment and the corresponding lifestyle can be counted amongst the fundamental sources of inspiration for contemporary culture. The historical revolution of visual forms of expression, in which the designs of everyday streetscape, with its graffiti, tags, tattoos, advertising or graphic design found their sustenance, define the progression of contemporary art. The urban environment as literal and metaphorical platform for this development both inspires and presents the artist and their works.
Notwithstanding this, the majority of projects and galleries are still operating on a mostly semi-profitable basis. Passion and dedication are still more important than business plans and projections. This has naturally led to a young generation that finds it difficult to kowtow to the dynamics and rules of the classic art market. Unbeatable participation costs combined with professional presentation and an uninterrupted passion for art – this is where we see the starting point for STROKE, the world’s first and only Urban Art Exhibit. The STROKE.ARTFAIR is not a repackaging of old presentation and sales rituals in new clothing. STROKE represents an unconventional and enjoyment-oriented handling of art. Whether with an art history education, a serious collectors intention, passion for form and colour or pure curiosity – STROKE stands for uncompromising equality and openness.
The STROKE.ARTFAIR is the world’s first art fair dedicated to artistic developments of many diverse subcultural influences throughout the last 30 years, such as Streetart, Graffiti, Low-Brow, Illustration, Skateboard Art and many more – subsumed under the term of Urban Art.

Mike Friedrich is a 33 years young illustrator & artist from Berlin, Germany. Born and raised in this awesome city, he made his first steps in the commercial world of art and design in the early 90’s by selling his dark fantasy illustrations to Berlin-based tattoo studios. Always interested in street art, he merged his fantasy roots with the elements of character design and urban art. The result – a sick, slimy mix with strong dark themes. Cuteness is over!
Mike started his career as a freelancer in 2000. Since then he has done a lot of illustration and design projects with different companies and labels (i.e. Nintendo, Karl Kani, Levi’s®, Hummel, Bring me the Horizon, Celio, Be-Mag and so on). Mike has worked as art director for laFraise, A better tomorrow and Cyroline – fashion labels in Germany. Also, Mike has won several awards during international design contests. Right now he works as an art director for MyVideo and is in his studio all the time on new funky art shizzle.
TIMROBOT is a freelance Graphic Designer and illustrator living & working in Berlin, Germany since 2007. His art is focused on character design, which is also reflected on his commercial work. Through the creatures he draws in his reduced graphical style, the 26-year-old quickly builds up an emotional relationship with his viewers. His cute and happy artwork will put a smile on your face. To date, TIMROBOT has worked in the streetwear industry with brands such as Ucon, Converse and Vans, to name a few. His work spectrum ranges from T-shirt graphics, editorial design and customizing sneakers, and he even does live paintings.
It’s a Happening Thing
West Berlin Gallery proudly presents NORBERT REISSIG’S first solo show “It’s a Happening Thing” from September 9th to September 24th 2010 at the West Berlin Gallery.
The exhibition will feature unreleased works from the past years and thematically deals with the decade of the 1960s, an epoque marked by social upheaval, misty-eyed romantic and strong contradictions. The artist visually approaches this legendary decade, aiming at interpreting it from a contemporary point of view, asking if there is any countermovement in our society today.
Reissig has developed a distinctive style implementing playful as well as formal graphic elements in his works, showing depth and reflectiveness in his subject matter. When asked how he would describe his work without using the actual term “art” he refers to it as “NonHippiePsychedelia”.
